The CDC's National Undergraduate Student Program: A Public Health Workplace Experience to Increase Student Interest in Public Health

Grant Amount: Approximately $ 4,000,000 total for one application in FY 2013.
This FOA addresses “Winnable Battles” priorities (www.cdc.gov/winnablebattles) and is in alignment with HHS/CDC performance goals to prepare for, prevent, detect, respond to, and contain health threats globally by providing global health promotion, health protection and health diplomacy. CDC is committed to fund research that will yield high impact public health improvements and that will assist in reducing the burden of disease and disability on the global population as defined under the role of the CDC as a WHO Collaborating Center for the International Health Regulations 2005 (IHR 2005) and the US Government’s Global Health Initiative (GHI) to support global health diplomacy.
The purpose of this funding announcement is to address the following key research objectives in Guatemala and the Central American Region:
(1) Conduct field and laboratory research on important human infectious diseases, with an emphasis on emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, neglected tropical diseases, zoonotic and vector-borne diseases, influenza, as well as other identifiable public health problems and concerns; (2) Incorporate the results of this research into operational disease prevention and control programs and public health preparedness in Guatemala and the Central American Region and also ensure sharing of expertise and research findings with other nations, agencies, and academic institutions.
To address these key research objectives, projects submitted in response to this funding announcement should focus on the topics that are public health priorities in Guatemala and the Central American Region, including: Infectious Diseases, Vaccines and Interventions, HIV/AIDS, Sustainable Capacity and Capability, Risk Factors, Drug Resistance, and Program Evaluation.
Applicants may propose more than one project to address these issues. Each project should focus on a single infectious disease syndrome or a group of diseases that are clinically or functionally related, on or an identifiable public health concern or problem impacting health in Guatemala and/or Central America and related to the Regional Health Plan established by COMISCA. Within each project, applicants must submit separate research plans and budgets for each project. Applicants must provide assurance of coordinated management and administrative support for the various projects.
Applicants may propose new projects, as well as pre-existing projects or activities that fit the scope of the FOA and address infectious diseases issues in Guatemala and the Central American Region. Such projects may include epidemiologic studies, laboratory-based studies, and the evaluation of interventions and/or control methods including therapeutic and preventative treatments.

Awards issued under this FOA are contingent on the availability of funds and submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
