Funding

Building Healthcare Practitioner Capacity around HPV Vaccine Communication

Description
Grant Amount: Estimated total funding available including direct and indirect costs for entire project period ( 3 year project period) $1.8 million.

The goal of this FOA is to build on prior research concerning communication around vaccines recommended for adolescents in general, and HPV vaccine in particular, in order to identify and test interventions that demonstrate effectiveness in improving provider-level communication and recommendation of these vaccines. This research would take place in two phases and would employ intervention and comparison practices. The first phase would include baseline vaccination coverage estimation and assessments of the type, duration, and impact of vaccine-related communication between pediatricians/family physicians and parents (or adolescents). The second phase, among intervention practices, would entail using the first-phase data to develop and test interventions and strategies to improve physician-parent/adolescent communication in a generalizable manner that fits within existing time and resource constraints of practices. At the end of the second phase, vaccination coverage would be reassessed in both intervention and comparison practices to evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions. Intervention practices will also be assessed regarding the utility/barriers of continuing to use the strategies tested, and if there were any downsides to the strategy with respect to other aspects of patient care.
