Symptom Management in HIV-Infected Individuals with Comorbid Conditions (R01)

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is seeking research focused on development, adaptation, or testing interventions aimed at identifying and managing symptoms related to HIV-Associated Non-AIDS (HANA) conditions, specifically functional capacity and frailty and increasing resilience (self-care) of HIV-infected persons with HANA.

A secondary purpose of this initiative is to develop a better understanding of the needs of caregivers of the aging person with HIV/AIDS and to consider methods to reduce their stress as they provide care. The objectives of this FOA include but are not limited to:

Assess the effects of symptoms associated with daily function and frailty on comorbid conditions in PLWHA (differentiated by gender, race/ethnicity, and culture);
Examine the relationships among functional capacity, symptoms and behavior in PLWHA;
Develop and test interventions aimed at increasing functional capacity and resilience and decreasing frailty in PLWHA;
Assess the impact of decreased functional capacity on caregivers of PLWHA.
